Imoniavwodo Efe Isreal
Imoniavwodo Efe Israel (b.1996) is a Nigerian visual artist from Delta state. He studied fine art at Yaba College, focusing on painting. Since 2019, Efe has worked as a painter, exploring portraiture and figurative compositions through his unique artistic lens.
Considering himself an art historian, Efe aims to connect the ancient and contemporary by researching old Benin traditions and beliefs. His work portrays spiritual figures, animals, and human forms reminiscent of ancient Benin sculptures. Characterized by intricate motifs, ornaments, and elaborate decorative elements, his paintings depict the flamboyant royalty and cultural history of southern Nigeria.
Rendered in lively acrylic paint and eccentric pen strokes, Efe’s compositions project his thoughts on preserving African ancestry and taking pride in one’s heritage. He finds inspiration in antiquities, seeking to reclaim lost narratives through cataloguing past events in his art. As customs change, Efe realizes art’s power to shape identity by reinventing traditions.
Efe lives and works as a studio artist in Lagos, Nigeria.
